With Harmony [和]


2024Inspired by the Chinese character ‘和’ (hé), which embodies the concepts of togetherness and union, this typeface aims to visually embody the harmonious coexistence of tradition and modernity, reflecting the interconnectedness of different generations.

Just as in a family where each generation builds upon the foundation laid by its predecessors, this typeface blends elements seamlessly, illustrating that one cannot exist without the other, creating a strong and enduring legacy for the future.



Type System

This typeface consists of four modular shapes:

Square: 
The newer generation symbolises modernity.

Petal: 
The older generation, resembling brush strokes, symbolises tradition

Modified Square and Petal: 
Symbolises the instilling of values from the older generation to the younger generation, highlighting the passing down of wisdom and traditions.

Type Rules

All letters must fit within a 10x10 square grid.

Each letter must be composed of at least one of each of the four modules. 

Each letter must consist of a minimum of 4 modules and a maximum of 6 modules.

All corners of the shapes must touch, allowing letters to connect seamlessly regardless of placement or order.

Shapes are allowed to overlap, symbolising the coexistence of different generations within a family.

Quiet Night Thought

Before my bed,
the bright moonlight shines.
I thought it was frost on the ground. I raise my head and gaze at the bright moon.
I lower my head and miss my hometown.
